Strong and Reliable Bell Loggers stand the Test of Time

The lumberjack has long been a figure that most of us tend to associate with strength and endurance and, in light of the challenging and dangerous nature of the job that these skilled workers undertake; this is an image that is well justified. However, although the men who undertake this task certainly need to be tough, the vehicles and the machinery upon which they must depend, every working day, are required to be even tougher.

One such item of equipment that has grown to become indispensable to many of those engaged in the forestry industry worldwide owes its origin to a man named Irvine Bell. During the early ‘60s, he conceived the idea of a machine that would be able to imitate closely the actions of a man but which would also far exceed the limits of a human’s strength. Over the next half century, his original product design has evolved to become the bright yellow Bell loggersthat are nowto be seen at almost all the places where timber is harvested on a commercial scale.

Every bit as remarkable as the strength and durability of these machines is the simplicity of their design – a feature that also serves to explain their unparalleled efficiency. In addition to their exceptionally low capital cost, these units are surprisingly light on fuel while their simple design with few moving parts makes them easy and economical to maintain. Together, these features provide their users with the lowest cost per tonne solution of any machine that is currently offered for the same purpose.

Providing the engine power and load capacity that is necessary to meet a range of differing terrains and operating conditions, these workhorses are offered in a selection of models. Each of these is based upon the triangular wheel arrangement that ensures the equal load distribution necessary to ensure safety and stability as well as the exceptional manoeuvrability for which these Bell loggers are renowned.

At the entry level is the Model 125A tri-wheeler with its in-line 3-cylinder, 2,8-litre, air-cooled engine able to generate 33 kW and designed to lift, transport and transfer a payload of around 750 kg. Four additional models are available in South Africa from Kanu Equipment; these are the 220A Telelogger, the 220E Teleboom and the 225A and 225E Crank Booms. Each of these is powered by a 4-cylinder engine providing up to 49 kW of power and a payload capacity of one tonne.

To ensure that these strong and reliable machines, that have so successfully demonstrated the validity of Irvine Bell’s concept, continue to perform as their manufacturer intended, requires a support service that is just as strong and reliable. Kanu Equipment is the leading supplier of Bell loggers as well as vehicles and equipment for agriculture, mining, construction, earthmoving, and road construction both locally and in many of the countries of continental Africa. The company has established an extensive support network that ensures its clients everywhere are just a phone call away whenever they may be in need of maintenance, repairs spares, or accessories.
